Horsepower remained unchanged, but the torque jumped to lb-ft of torque. This came at the cost of a lower redline, which became 8, RPM. The AP2 S also received slightly revised styling, new alloy wheel designs and better suspension for reduced oversteer. Every S sent power to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission, with no automatic offered at any point.
The excellent chassis tuning, the total lack of weight and the rev-happy powertrain made the S a total joy to drive. On the inside, the S's interior is very simple.
The interior setup angles basically all the controls towards the driver, to the point where they're only accessible to the driver. The climate controls and most of the stereo controls are directly behind the steering wheel, though the panel in the center hides the actual stereo system. The AP2 S received a few changes, including a new Honda logo on the steering wheel and a leather-wrapped shift knob.
One of the S's best known interior features is the gauge cluster, which is fully digital. The tachometer takes up most of the space, with only a digital speed readout in the middle. The fuel and temperature gauges are basically identical to those found in the original Insight. The S doesn't feature the latest and greatest technology, but it does have a good amount of creature comforts, including cruise control, climate control as well as a power top.
In terms of reliability, there most likely won't be a lot to complain about here. Obviously, the S seats two passengers, and it has just 5. The Honda S is slowly starting to creep up in value on the used market. They meet reserves on auction sites consistently, and they're starting to get very expensive in good condition.
You will also need to cut slits in the areas marked by the green arrows. After every hole you create, re-insert the plastic clips to secure the cover to the center console. Again, work from front to back on each side. You will do the same thing here. Cut out slits for the clips to go through. If there is any excess leather, you can either cut it off or tuck it in like I did in the area marked by the green arrows Use a putty knife with the edge taped over with painters tape and gently work the extra material underneath the center console.
Do the same thing for the rear part of the leather cover, making sure that the cut out tucks under where the clip is located. The cut out is marked by the green arrow. You will do the same thing for the other side. This is what it should look like when you are complete. Reinstall the center console unless you're installing the armrest, in which case leave it for the end don't forget the electrical connections and the radio door.
Take the center console and lay it upside down. Than remove the 4 screws holding the elbow pad marked by the red arrows. Lay out the things you will need to attach the leather to the elbow pad. You will need glue with a brush, binder clips, scissors, and if you want to add more cushion you can add some thick cloth in between the leather cover and the elbow pad.
I have also removed the old leather off of the elbow pad so that the new leather can glue properly to the plastic elbow pad. You can do this by slowly peeling the leather off.
Flip the leather cover over, and place the cushion cloth in the middle along with the elbow pad. Center everything and make sure that its the way you like it. Add the binder clips to keep the leather from moving off center. It's no secret that some people want the Honda S to make a comeback. Famous for being Suki's dynamic drive in 2 Fast 2 Furious , the S is a certified sports car that can give you a run for your money.
That said, we're left wondering, "How fast can a S be in a half mile? Is that possible? For a factory Honda S, the answer is a big "No! During his runs, Leiby had been pushing above mph. On one run, he actually managed to go as fast as In the video, Leiby looks somewhat disappointed that his drive just became the fastest S in the world in the half-mile.
